Roy Day and Alison Ross Obituary, Kanawha County West Virginia Death: Two Lives Lost in Dunbar Toll Bridge Crash

Roy Benson Day of Hurricane and Alison Catherine Ross of Nitro have been identified as the two people who died in a serious multi-vehicle crash on the Dunbar Toll Bridge in Kanawha County, West Virginia, on Monday, September 21, 2026.

According to the South Charleston Police Department, the crash happened shortly after 3 p.m. and involved four vehicles. Police said the initial collision was a head-on crash between two vehicles, while two other vehicles were damaged in the resulting incident.

Day, 68, and Ross were both killed in the collision. Police initially reported one fatality before confirming Monday evening that a second person had also died. Another person involved in the crash was reported to be in serious condition, while people involved in the secondary collision suffered minor injuries.

The Dunbar Toll Bridge was closed in both directions following the crash as emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene. The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department assisted with accident reconstruction, and authorities continue to investigate what caused the vehicles to collide.

Police have not announced a final determination regarding the cause of the head-on collision. Investigators said the vehicle traveling toward South Charleston struck the vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, but the reason for that movement remains under investigation.

Day and Ross’s deaths have left families, friends and communities in Hurricane and Nitro mourning two lives lost in a sudden roadway tragedy. Funeral arrangements and additional personal information were not included in the latest police and local news reports reviewed.
