Dennis Cometti Obituary, Cause of Death: Iconic Australian Commentator Remembered for a Remarkable Broadcasting Career

Perth, Western Australia — Dennis Cometti, one of Australia’s most distinctive and celebrated sports commentators, has died at the age of 76, leaving behind a broadcasting career that spanned more than five decades. His death was confirmed on March 4, 2026, prompting tributes from across Australian sport and media.

Cometti became particularly renowned for his AFL commentary, where his smooth delivery, sharp wit and memorable turns of phrase made him a familiar voice to generations of Australian sports fans. His broadcasting career began in Perth in 1968, and he later worked with the ABC, Seven Network, Nine Network and other broadcasters.

Beyond Australian rules football, Cometti covered Test cricket and three Summer Olympic Games, including Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000. His long association with Seven and his commentary partnership with Bruce McAvaney became a defining part of his career.

Cometti retired from regular AFL commentary in 2016 but returned to call the 2021 AFL Grand Final in Perth, which became his final match. He was later recognised with numerous honours, including induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, as well as appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia.
