Geimisha Broadnax Obituary-Death: 22-Year-Old Dies After South Bend Bissell Street Shooting

SOUTH BEND, Indiana — Geimisha Broadnax, a 22-year-old woman who was critically injured in a shooting on Bissell Street, has died from her injuries, turning the weekend violence into a deadly incident that claimed three lives.

Broadnax died Tuesday, September 22, 2026, after spending several days in critical condition following the shooting, according to South Bend police and local news reports.

The shooting happened shortly before 11:30 p.m. Saturday, September 19, in the 1300 block of Bissell Street, south of Coquillard Park. Officers initially responded to a report of a large fight before the call was updated to a shooting.

Police found three people suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Broadnax was transported to a hospital in critical condition, while 20-year-old Alaya Maez and 18-year-old Jo’Von Hopper were pronounced dead after the shooting. Broadnax later became the third fatality.

The South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have not publicly announced a suspect or explained what led to the gunfire. Police have indicated that witnesses or others with information may not yet have come forward.
