Jahmeik Modlin Obituary, Death: Harlem Remembers 4-Year-Old Who Died After Severe Malnutrition

Jahmeik Modlin, a 4-year-old boy from Harlem, New York, is being remembered after his death in October 2024 following what prosecutors described as prolonged starvation, malnutrition and dehydration.

Jahmeik was found unconscious inside his family’s Harlem apartment on October 13, 2024. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors provided end-of-life care before he died the following morning. Prosecutors said he weighed only 19 pounds and had suffered from chronic malnutrition and dehydration.

The circumstances surrounding his death led to criminal charges against his parents, Nytavia Ragsdale and Laron Modlin. Prosecutors later alleged that the couple had deprived their children of food and isolated them inside the apartment. Jahmeik’s three older siblings were also hospitalized and treated for severe malnutrition after authorities intervened.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office subsequently announced that Jahmeik’s parents had been indicted on murder and other charges. The allegations made in court filings describe an extended period of neglect and abuse. The parents are entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until the charges are proven in court.

Jahmeik’s death also prompted scrutiny of New York City’s child-welfare system. His relatives accused the Administration for Children’s Services of failing to adequately respond to earlier concerns involving the family, while city and state authorities said reviews were being conducted. The family later announced plans for legal action against the city.

In the weeks following his death, members of the Harlem community gathered for vigils and memorial services. Residents lit candles and released balloons in his memory, while community leaders and relatives called attention to the tragedy and the welfare of his surviving siblings.

Jahmeik’s short life and death remain the subject of an ongoing legal and child-welfare reckoning, while those who knew him and members of the Harlem community continue to remember the young child whose life ended at just four years old.
