Jed Griffin Obituary, Cause of Death: Osborne Footballer Dies After Quad Bike Incident
OSBORNE, New South Wales — Jed Griffin, a 25-year-old footballer and member of the Osborne Football Netball Club, has died following a tragic quad bike incident at the club’s recreation ground in southern New South Wales.
Griffin died on Sunday, September 20, 2026, after he was towed by a quad bike and struck a goalpost at the Osborne Recreation Ground on Osborne Yerong Creek Road, about 70 kilometres west of Wagga Wagga. Emergency services were called shortly after 2:30 p.m., and bystanders attempted to provide first aid, but Griffin died at the scene.
His death came one day after Griffin had played for Osborne in the Hume Football Netball League senior grand final against Henty. Osborne lost the match by six points. Griffin was remembered by his coach, Myles Aalbers, as a fierce competitor with a quick sense of humour and a distinctive cheeky smile.
Aalbers also spoke about Griffin’s commitment to the club, noting that he regularly travelled past other football clubs to play and train with Osborne. He said Griffin loved his friends as well as fishing and hunting, and described him as an important member of the football community.
Police arrested the 20-year-old quad bike driver following the incident. He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, driving in a dangerous manner and negligent driving occasioning death. His bail was extended following a court appearance on September 23, with the matter adjourned until November.
The Osborne community and surrounding football clubs have since paid tribute to Griffin. Counselling support has also been arranged for people affected by the tragedy.
Griffin’s death remains the subject of a police investigation. The charges against the other man are allegations and have not been proven in court.
