Dr Steven Lee Obituary, Ross-on-Wye Death: Doctor and Pilot Officer Honoured Four Years After Fatal A40 Crash
Dr Steven James Lee, a 26-year-old medical student from Rhos-on-Sea, North Wales, has been remembered by his family following his death in a fatal collision on the A40 near Ross-on-Wye in August 2022. Four years after the crash, his family have paid tribute to his life and achievements following the conviction and sentencing of the driver responsible.
Lee was riding his motorcycle between Ganarew and Monmouth at about 9:45 p.m. on August 11, 2022, when his motorcycle collided with a tractor and trailer carrying hay bales. Emergency crews attended, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His family remembered him as an exceptionally talented and accomplished young man. Steven had earned a biology degree and a master’s degree in human immunology before pursuing medicine at Swansea University. He had also worked as a laboratory technician and was close to completing his medical studies at the time of his death.
Outside medicine, Lee had a wide range of interests and achievements. He was an accomplished piano player and qualified piano teacher, a photographer and a keen motorcyclist. He also joined the Air Training Corps at 13, developed a passion for flying and eventually received the Queen’s Commission, serving as a pilot officer and continuing his involvement with the organisation.
In recognition of his academic achievements, Swansea University has since awarded Lee his doctorate posthumously. His family recently accepted the qualification on his behalf, an occasion his sister Rachel described as deeply bittersweet.
Lee is remembered by his family, partner Sophie, friends and the wider community through the Dr Steven Lee Foundation, established in his memory to support advanced motorcycle training and help reduce fatalities on the roads.
The recent court proceedings brought renewed attention to the circumstances of his death. Philip Baker was convicted of causing Lee’s death by dangerous driving and was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court on September 22, 2026, to eight years in prison and a nine-year driving disqualification.
